I regret not being able to give this book zero or minus something stars. The book pretends to be highly qualified by the incessant use of a poetic style including a gazillion metaphors, similes, and borrowing from Bible and classic literature To tell you the truth all those in this context seemed really ridiculous to me while actually turning out to be quite stupid and inept by using all those beautiful images at the service of a highly comic love story.
The Bishop guy is purely evil and acts as a member of mafia like he sends one of his guys with an order for the old guy: Marry your daughter to my dear relative or else! Well I think Gibran thought one bad guy is enough for his perfect story. When I was done with the book I read what was written on the back of it: "Khalil Gibran, the revered author of The Prophet and The Voice of the Master, reveals [this word shocked me]the poignant secrets and sorrows of first love in this mystical [I would say stupid] masterpiece.
The characters are all stupid in one way or another. The narrator seems mostly like a hallucinated lonely guy who has nothing to do but to imagine things does he do anything else?! He tells and tells and tells. He explains things to the reader. In fact it seemed to me that this is Gibran expressing his partial hatred of tradition,Oriental beliefs, male society, and treatment of women he is again repeating the same objectifying of women but well in a covert way as if this is his manifesto.
